WORKING
WITH THE WEATHER: We do have to keep in mind that the
weather can alter, change, or even cancel all kayaking activity! The Pacific is
not always peaceful and pacific in the winter months of mid-October through
mid-March. The surf can pick up quite a bit in any month here, so it's possible
that due to somewhat heavy winds and surf we could have to change Hawaii kayak
tour itinerary considerably to offer you a realistically safe kayaking trip. If
extremely high surf, winds, or rainy storms make your kayak trip dangerous or
uncomfortable, we will not cancel your trip or refund your money but instead go
beach and mountain camping and hiking instead, and hope the water calms down in
a day or two for kayaking! We hope for calm seas with little wind,
chop, or surf, and actually have the best conditions for extended kayak camping
in all the Hawaiian islands, right here, but if your trip is scheduled in the
winter months, some of the above is likely. CUSTOMIZED ITINERARIES
are always interesting for us to plan and enjoy with you.
We are glad to crank up or ratchet down the level of intensity of our trips to
suit your needs. At our once-a-year "no holds barred" trip for the very fit ,
experienced, and adventurous traveler we take a trip that you will not forget.
One area we will not take kayakers is on the Hamakua Coast from Waipio Valley
to Waimanu and beyond to the end, for a number of reason--the nicest of which
is that we abide by the desire of the local people to keep commercial kayaks
off this stretch of the coast and the nastiest is that we want to keep it for
ourselves. It's also dangerous year-round! HAWAII TRIP PLANNING
SERVICES: We here at Hawaii Pack and Paddle are by
necessity and naturepackers, paddlers, fiddlers, schemers, expediters,
and Sherpas /Sherpettes par excellence, and can usually find, arrange, get,
shuttle, or haul for you anything you would need on this island before, during,
or after our trip together. We've helped with books and magazine articles,
scouted locations and arranged Hawaiian sailing canoes for film crews, helped
scientists do research from our boats, and arranged unusual, fascinating trips
for groups of all kinds to kayak Hawaii.
I also do trip consulting for which I charge a small and
reasonable fee. This may vary from planning a two week trip at many different
places for you on the island or giving you an incredibly detailed description
of every bay and beach you could paddle to on the west side of the island.
